Role Descriptions:
Physician: There is a physician on duty in the infirmary at all times. Their schedule is posted in the infirmary. Physicians often work in four-hour blocks and then have twelve hours over night. Physicians must assess all campers who present to the infirmary with fever, bleeding or pain, along with any other concern the Triage or Infirmary nurse may have. Physicians will develop and dictate medical plan of action and write orders if/when necessary. Physician's orders are written in progress notes.
Triage/Charge Nurse: The triage/charge nurse will assess all children coming into the infirmary. The order in which the children will be seen will be based on immediate need determined by the triage/charge nurse. The decision is also to be made whether the child needs to be seen by a physician or a nurse. The triage/charge nurse will assist the infirmary and inpatient nurses when necessary. The triage/charge nurse will assume a leadership role in conjunction with the coordinators, physician on duty and camp director to manage daily activities of the infirmary, the medical needs of the camp and the medical staff.
Infirmary Nurse: The infirmary nurse will provide all nursing care to campers seen in the infirmary. They will transcribe orders on to med sheets when necessary. They will assist physicians and administer the first dose of new medication when indicated.
Inpatient Nurse: The inpatient nurse will provide all nursing care to children who are admitted as inpatients to the infirmary. They will assist the infirmary nurse during down time. The inpatient nurse will be available by walkie-talkie if no campers are "inpatient" in the infirmary and the infirmary nurse does not require assistance.
Activity Nurse: The activity nurse will be available and cover the activity the entire time. The nurse will have a walkie-talkie with them and first aid supplies.
Night Coverage: The night shift is from 8:00 pm to 8:00 am. Night nurses assume care for all infirmary activities after receiving report from the Triage/Charge nurse. They provide care for campers staying in the infirmary as inpatients over night. Night nurses will start overnight continuous infusions or treatments after the evening activities. They will be available by walkie-talkie at all times throughout the night. Counselors have walkie- talkies in cabins at night and will call the infirmary for any medical issues. The night nurses will administer any medications that may be scheduled during the night.
